By Ferns Racing PR
Shelby Township, Mich.-February 7, 2012 - Lorz Motorsports has signed 16-year old Taylor Ferns of Shelby Township, Mich. to a one-year contract to compete with the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour this season, as part of the team's Driver Development program. The reigning USAC Mopar D1 Midget Series champion and winningest female in USAC history, will pilot the No. 76 Dodge Charger during the full 14-race schedule, as she chases the "Rookie of the Year" honors and the series championship.
"This is a great opportunity with Lorz Motorsports, and I am really excited" said Ferns. "I had been wanting to get into stock cars, and this all came about at the right time. To work with a team like Lorz Motorsports is going to be great and we look to improve every time we are on the race track."
Lorz Motorsports, based in Midlothian, Ill., just outside of Chicago, is owned by Mike Lorz, who competed for many years in ARCA and ASA. Ferns will drive a Lefthander Chassis equipped with a McGunegill crate engine under the hood, and Dan Lorz will serve as crew chief.
"We are definitely excited to have Taylor with us this year," said Mike Lorz. "She is a very good racer and fits what we were looking for in a driver. She has done a lot of racing in her young career and brings car control from racing a midget on the dirt, asphalt and the small tracks. I think Taylor will do a really good job for us."
The 2012 campaign will open for Ferns on April 22 at the three-eighths-mile Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, Ind. The JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour will visit 12 tracks, ranging from one-quarter-mile bullrings to high-banked, high speed half-miles. The series will make stops in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio over the course of the season which stretches from April through October.
"We are very excited to have Taylor Ferns competing with our JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour in 2012," said Glenn Luckett, Managing Partner of Champion Racing Association (CRA). "Taylor has already made a name for herself in racing at a very young age, and we look forward to having her compete for Rookie of the Year honors and for series championship points. It says a lot for CRA to have a driver like Taylor competing with us."
Ferns won at the Indianapolis Speedrome last year, to become the winningest female driver in USAC history. In 16 feature events starts with the USAC Mopar D1 Midget Series, in 2011, she earned 16 Top-10 finishes en route to claiming the series title. She also made her debut with the USAC Mopar National Midget Series during the Gold Crown Midget Nationals at Tri-City (Ill.) Speedway, in addition to competing in the famed Turkey Night Midget Grand Prix at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway on Thanksgiving.
The high-school sophomore is the youngest female ever to win in a sprint car, taking the checkered flag in her first-ever start at Spartan Speedway in her home state in 2010 at the age of 14. She has five career sprint car wins at the quarter-mile paved oval.
"The versatility of racing the midget on the dirt and asphalt, as well as the sprint car, should help a lot," noted Ferns. "I can't wait to transfer what I've learned in the open wheel cars into the heavier stock cars and it should work out pretty well."
Drivers that have been part of Lorz Motorsports over the years include: two-time ASA champion Gary St. Amant, Landon Cassill, Michael Annett, Erik Darnell and Michael Pickins among others. The team began its Driver Development program in 2006, working with younger driver to help further their careers.
Ferns has also signed a Management Agreement with Brella Sports Group, owned by Jesse Dickerson, who has been highly involved in Motorsports for over 15 years. For sponsorship and marketing opportunities contact Dickerson at 317-374-2004.
